The track said on its Web site that Hay had reached the event's final round when his dragster, dubbed "High Voltage Hayride," spun out of control and crashed, The Des Moines Register reported.

His biographical page on the Outlaw Fuel Altereds Web site said Hay, who had been racing since the 1970s, was married with three children and two grandchildren.
