DES MOINES, Iowa, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Dragster driver Tim Hay died in a spin out during last weekend's World Fuel Altered Nationals at Eddyville Raceway Park in Iowa, track officials said.

The 49-year-old drag racer from Burleson, Texas, was the defending champion.

The track said on its Web site that Hay had reached the event's final round when his dragster, dubbed "High Voltage Hayride," spun out of control and crashed, The Des Moines Register reported.

His biographical page on the Outlaw Fuel Altereds Web site said Hay, who had been racing since the 1970s, was married with three children and two grandchildren.
