Weibring leads by two at Tradition

SUNRIVER, Ore., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- D.A. Weibring shot his second straight 67 Friday and took a two-shot lead midway through the Tradition -- the year's fourth major event on the Champions Tour.

Weibring's 134 total at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater course put him in position for his first major title on either the regular tour or the Champions circuit.

Former British Open winner Tom Lehman was alone in second at 136. The group at 137 included Jay Don Blake, Bob Tway, Fred Funk and Gil Morgan, a two-time winner of this event and who is a month away from his 64th birthday.

Bernhard Langer, attempting to become the third player in Champions Tour history to win three straight major championships, was tied for seventh with Jay Haas at 138.

In back-to-back weeks, Langer recently won the U.S. Senior Open and British Senior Open. Gary Player is the only Champions Tour member to have won three consecutive majors.

European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has said he is considering Langer for one of his wild-card selections to the team.
