NFL: Pittsburgh 23, Detroit 7

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Jeff Reed kicked three field goals and Calvin Johnson caught a touchdown pass Saturday, boosting the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 23-7 pre-season win over Detroit.

Although he is eligible to play in exhibition games, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did not make an appearance. Roethlisberger has been suspended for the first six regular-season games due to his violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Byron Leftwich started at quarterback for the Steelers and was 6-of-10 for 43 yards.

Detroit's Matthew Stafford was 8-of-11 for 61 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The teams were sent off the field with 1:37 remaining in the second quarter because of a heavy thunderstorm. Pittsburgh had a 13-7 lead when the game officials ordered an early start to halftime.
