ST. LOUIS, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Jake Westbrook won his first game in a St. Louis uniform Friday, working six innings in helping the Cardinals dispose of the Chicago Cubs 6-3.
Westbrook (1-0) made his third start for St. Louis since being obtained from Cleveland July 16. He had been 6-7 with the Indians before the trade.
He gave up two runs on six hits and left the game with a 4-2 lead. Ryan Franklin retired the side in the ninth for his 21st save.
Albert Pujols keyed the St. Louis offense with three hits, including a solo homer. He scored three times.
The Cardinals stayed a game in front of Cincinnati for the lead in the National League Central.
Pujols tied it at 1-1 with his 29th homer in the first and Matt Holliday put the Cardinals in front for good with an RBI double in the third.
Yadier Molina had a sacrifice fly RBI in both the third and seventh innings.
Thomas Diamond (0-3) made his third major league start and took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in four innings. He also walked four.
The Cubs have lost 12 of their last 14 games.
