MLB: San Diego 5, Los Angeles Dodgers 0

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Chris Denorfia scored on a two-run, inside-the-park homer Thursday and five San Diego pitchers combined on a shutout in defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0.

The Padres salvaged a split of the four-game series and increased their lead over second-place San Francisco to two games in the National League West.

Denorfia's homer came in the ninth inning to give the Padres a cushion and Heath Bell survived a typical jam in the bottom half of the inning to complete the shutout.

Bell came on with two out in the eighth inning with the Padres holding a 3-0 lead and thus picked up his 31st save.

Los Angeles was unable to score despite putting two runners on in the fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Kevin Correia worked the first 5 2/3 innings to get the win, giving up four hits and walking one. He did not record a strikeout.

The loss went to Chad Billingsley (9-6), who surrendered three runs on seven hits in six innings.
