MLB: Cleveland 9, Boston 1

BOSTON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Andy Marte's three-run homer finished off a five-run seventh Wednesday that sent the Cleveland Indians cruising to a 9-1 victory over Boston.

Justin Masterson (4-10) gave up a homer by David Ortiz for Boston's only run and four Cleveland relievers combined to allow just two hits with six strikeouts over the final four innings.

Boston starter Jon Lester continued to struggle and center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, activated from the disabled list after being out for two months with fractured ribs, went hitless in five at bats as the leadoff man in the order.

The Indians built a 4-1 lead through six innings, thanks in part to a solo homer from Jason Nix, before breaking things open with their big seventh frame.

With Scott Atchison on the mound, Cleveland capitalized on two errors to score two runs before Marte hit a 1-2 pitch out to left for his fourth homer of the year. All five runs In the inning were unearned.

Lester (11-7) surrendered seven hits over five innings to suffer the loss. He has dropped his last four starts.
