MLB: Phila. 6, Washington 4 (11 innings)

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Placido Polanco delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the 11th inning Sunday and the Philadelphia Phillies went on to down Washington 6-4.

Wilson Valdez laid down a bunt single off Collin Balester (0-1) to start the 11th, and pitcher Roy Oswalt came up as a pinch-hitter and sent Valdez to second on a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Polanco lined a single up the middle to put the Phillies ahead 5-4.

The next batter, Jason Werth, chased Polanco home with a double off the right field scoreboard to give the Phillies and insurance run.

Jose Contreras (6-3) got the win with a scoreless 10th inning and Brad Lidge collected his 11th save in the 11th as the Phillies avoided a being swept in a three-game series at Nationals Park.

Adam Dunn socked his 25th homer of the year for Washington.
