Petkovic wins long match in Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey, July 28 (UPI) -- No. 6-seeded Andrea Petkovic survived a three-set test Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Istanbul Cup tennis tournament in Turkey.

Petkovic, who lost just three games in her first-round match, was on the court nearly 3 hours in a 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3 victory over Ekaterina Makarova. Petkovic won just three more points -- 119-116 -- overall than Makarova but took two key service breaks in the third set to advance.

Fifth-seeded Tsvetana Pironkova didn't make it out of her second-round match, losing to Anastasia Rodionova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Rodionova had six breaks while Pironkova managed three but all were in the second set.

Rodionova moves into a quarterfinal match against Elena Vesnina, who had little trouble with Stefanie Voegele in a 6-3, 6-2 win. Vesnina has four breaks in eight Voegele service games.

Vera Dushevina completed the day's schedule with a 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-2 victory over Anastasija Sevastova.
