Upset win advances Voegele in Istanbul Cup

ISTANBUL, Turkey, July 26 (UPI) -- Stefanie Voegele notched an early upset Monday in first-round play of the Istanbul Cup tennis tournament in Turkey.

Voegele ousted fourth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a tight match. Voegele won just three more points (85-82) over the course of the match and was able to match Shvedova with three service breaks in forcing the second-set tie-breaker.

No. 6-seeded Andrea Petkovic breezed through her match Monday, knocking off Pemra Ozgen 6-2, 6-1 in 62 minutes. Petkovic piled up five breaks in eight Ozgen service games.

Also, Vera Dushevina came from behind for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Petra Martic in a match that featured 14 breaks of serve. Dushevina had three breaks in each of the final two sets.

Top-seeded Francesca Schiavone jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Anne Keothavong before play was suspended Monday because of rain.
