ISLAMORADA, Fla., July 21 (UPI) -- A caretaker who lives in a cottage at the Florida home of former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson has been charged with threatening sheriff's deputies with a gun.
Robert Twist Jr., 58, was persuaded to surrender after spending more than 5 hours Tuesday barricaded in the cottage in Islamorada in the Florida Keys, The Miami Herald reported. Monroe County sheriff's deputies originally came to the house because of a report he might be suicidal.
The deputies said Twist pointed a gun at them after they entered the cottage. One tried unsuccessfully to stun him, and the other fired a shot that missed.
Johnson, who was a coach with the University of Miami, the Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys, has a large oceanfront property in a section of Islamorada nicknamed Millionaire's Row.
After the deputies retreated, Twist shut himself in the cottage and refused to come out. Police surrounded the Johnson estate, and hostage negotiators were called in and used a robot to give Twist a telephone.
During the afternoon, Twist shouted at police, including urging them to shoot or kill him. At about 4 p.m., he surrendered and was charged with aggravated assault.
