MLB: Pittsburgh 11, Milwaukee 9

PITTSBURGH, July 20 (UPI) -- Pedro Alvarez blasted a grand slam homer in a nine-run first inning Tuesday and the Pittsburgh Pirates hung on to down Milwaukee 11-9.

Alvarez added a solo blast in the next inning and finished the night with five RBI. Neil Walker went 5-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored as the Pirates scored nine runs in the first inning of a home game for the first time since 1893.

Walker, Delwyn Young and Jose Tabata each collected run-scoring doubles in the big inning.

The Brewers, however stormed back for seven runs and nine hits off Pirates starter Brad Lincoln and D.J. Carrasco (2-2) came in to toss 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to collect the victory.

Milwaukee starter Dave Bush (4-8) was assaulted for 10 runs over four innings.

Jim Edmonds homered, went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs for the Brewers.
