MLB: Cleveland 8, Detroit 2

CLEVELAND, July 16 (UPI) -- Andy Marte put Cleveland ahead with a two-run homer in the fourth Friday and the Indians went on to down Detroit 8-2.

Marte broke a 2-2 tie with his third home run of the year and Austin Kearns added a two-run shot during a four-run sixth inning that broke the game open.

Cleveland had lost five out of six games heading into the All-Star break.

Jake Westbrook (6-5) survived 5 2/3 innings to get the victory, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out five.

Detroit lost its second in a row following a five-game winning streak.

Max Scherzer (6-7) had gone 4-0 in his previous five starts, but he took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings. He walked a season-high five and struck out seven.

Scherzer had surrendered only three runs in 27 2/3 innings coming into this contest.
