Koivu signs long-term deal with Wild

MINNEAPOLIS, July 15 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Wild announced Thursday captain Mikko Koivu had signed a lucrative contract extension keeping him with the team through the 2017-18 season.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported the deal, worth $47.25 million, has a full no-trade clause. Koivu is to get $5.4 million each year with $1.89 million signing bonuses in each October in 2011, 201, 2015 and 2017, as well as January 2018, the newspaper said.

"I am pleased to announce that our captain, Mikko Koivu, has signed a seven-year contract extension," Minnesota General Manager Chuck Fletcher said. "This is an historic day for the Wild. Mikko is the flag in the ground that we will build our team around.

"He is our franchise player, an excellent leader and an exceptional hockey player."

Koivu, 27, played in 80 games last season and established career highs with 22 goals, 49 assists and 71 points. He also helped lead Finland to a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics.

He has been in the NHL for five seasons, all with Minnesota, and has produced 79 goals and 176 assists in 362 games.
