RENO, Nev., July 15 (UPI) -- Matt Bettencourt, who has not had a Top-10 finish this season, grabbed the lead Thursday after one round of the Reno-Tahoe Open.
Bettencourt is in his second year on the PGA Tour and is playing on the circuit for the 53rd time. He has missed the cut, however, in more than half his starts.
He shot a 6-under-par 66 over the Montreux Golf and Country Club course -- a round that included an eagle at the par-5 17th.
Chris DiMarco was alone in second at 67. Will MacKenzie and Craig Bowden shared third place at 68.
With the tour's top players in Scotland playing at the British Open, this tournament presents an opportunity for someone to come up a much-needed win.
No one currently among the first 25 on the FedEx Cup points list is entered here this week. Vaughn Taylor is the leading participant on that list, standing in 26th place.
