ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 13 (UPI) -- Former Michigan football Coach Lloyd Carr, now the school's associate athletic director, said Tuesday he will retire from the position in September.

Carr said in a statement he will end his 30 years of service to the school Sept. 1.

"I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity to assist two great coaches here in Bo Schembechler and Gary Moeller and I will always appreciate Joe Roberson's decision to name me the head coach in 1995," Carr said. "Most of all, I am thankful for the young men I coached and for all the memories I have from my time at Michigan."

Carr led the Wolverines as head football coach for 13 years, racking up an overall record of 122-40 with one national championship (1997) and five Big Ten titles.

His coaching wins total trails only those of Schembechler and Fielding H. Yost.
