Mize takes Montreal, 1st win in 17 years

MONTREAL, July 4 (UPI) -- Larry Mize collected his first tournament victory since 1993 Sunday, carding an 8-under-par 64 to claim the Montreal Championship.

The one-shot decision over second-round leader John Cook gave Mize -- a former Masters champion -- his first title on the Champions Tour and first overall win since notching a pair of 1993 victories on the PGA Tour and one on the European Tour the same year.

Mize, 51, finished 54 holes on the Fontainebleau course at 17-under 199. He registered an eagle on the par-five 10th and made three straight birdies down the stretch.

Cook (68) failed to birdie any his final three holes and thus ended with sole possession of second place at 16-under 200.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin (67) ended up in a third-place tie with Dan Forsman (65) at 14-under 202.

Bob Gilder (66), Jay Haas (67), Loren Roberts (67), Fred Couples (68) and D.A. Weibring (68) all finished in a fifth-place tie at minus-13.
