MLB: Chicago Cubs 3, Pittsburgh 1

CHICAGO, June 29 (UPI) -- Ted Lilly tossed seven strong innings and Alfonso Soriano homered twice Tuesday to boost the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 decision over Pittsburgh.

Lilly (3-6) was sharp, scattering six hits and a walk and striking out five in his first win against Pittsburgh this season in three decisions. His only mistake came against Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, who knocked a lead-off homer in the fifth inning.

Sean Marshall hurled a scoreless eighth inning and Carlos Marmol picked up his 14th save with a perfect ninth, fanning the final two Pirates hitters to end the game.

Soriano bashed solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings to provide the Cubs' offense.

Pirates starter Jeff Karstens (2-3) absorbed the hard-luck loss, giving up two earned runs on seven hits over six innings.
