Watson bests Verplank, Pavin in playoff

CROMWELL, Conn., June 27 (UPI) -- Bubba Watson two-putted for a par on the second playoff hole Sunday, capturing the Travelers Championship and his first PGA Tour win.

Watson made it into a playoff with Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin despite stumbling with a double-bogey on the 17th hole of regulation. He rebounded with a birdie on the 18th to finish with a round of 4-under 66.

That knotted him with Verplank (64) and Pavin (66) at 14-under-par 266 at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

After Pavin was eliminated on the first playoff hole, Verplank missed a par-saving putt on the second extra hole and watched as Watson tapped in for his long-awaited initial PGA Tour victory.

Chris Riley (65) ended in sole possession of fourth place at minus-13 while Rickey Barnes (68) and Chad Campbell (66) finished one shot further back at minus-12.
