RUSTENBURG, South Africa, June 26 (UPI) -- Asamoah Gyan's goal early in overtime Saturday boosted Ghana to a 2-1 victory over the United States in a World Cup round of 16 match.

The tired U.S. team had 27 minutes after Gyan's marker to try to forge another tie, but their best chance off a Steve Cherundolo corner kick was headed just wide by Maurice Edu.

With the win at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa, Ghana -- the sole remaining African team in the World Cup -- advances to face Uruguay in the quarterfinals while the United States goes home after a thrilling World Cup ride.

Ghana went up 1-0 on an early goal in the fifth minute by Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Landon Donovan got the U.S. equalizer on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Regulation time ended in a tie, forcing the two 15-minute extra time periods.
