Nadal, Murray win in straight sets

LONDON, June 22 (UPI) -- No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal and fourth-seeded Andy Murray posted straight-set wins Tuesday in first-round action at Wimbledon.

The game's best players had a much easier time Tuesday than their counterparts Monday when No. 1-seeded Roger Federer and third-seeded Novak Djokovic needed five sets to advance.

Nadal was workmanlike in a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Kei Nishikori. He faced just three break points (losing one) and had 45 winners against just 16 unforced errors.

Murray lost serve once in a 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jan Hajek. The second and third sets took a total of 56 minutes as Murray won 63 percent of the points in the sets.

No. 6-seeded Robin Soderling also advanced in straight sets, taking out Robby Ginepri 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, while ninth-seeded David Ferrer breezed by Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-2, 6-3; No. 10-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took a tight 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-4 decision from Robert Kendrick; and 13th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny beat Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).

Fabio Fognini surprised eighth-seeded Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (11-9), 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4; Xavier Malisse ousted 14th-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1; Andreas Seppi slipped past 19th-seeded Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 and Lukas Lacko eliminated 24th-seeded Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in men's draw upsets.

No. 23-seeded John Isner was headed into a fifth set against Nicolas Mahut and Thiemo de Bakker and Santiago Giraldo were tied at two sets each when play was called Tuesday.

Other seeded players advancing Tuesday were 18th-seeded Sam Querrey, 25th-seeded Thomaz Bellucci, No. 26 Gilles Simon, No. 32 Julien Benneteau and No. 33 Philipp Petzschner.

Unseeded players winning Tuesday included Robin Haase, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Lukasz Kubot, Jarkko Nieminen, Michael Russell, Tobias Kamke, Ivan Dodig, Marcel Granollers, Illya Marchenko, Jeremy Chardy, Andreas Beck, Martin Fischer, Julian Reister and Florent Serra.
