V. Williams among Wimbledon winners

LONDON, June 21 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Venus Williams rolled to a win Monday but French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was defeated on the first day of Wimbledon.

Williams was 6-3, 6-2 winner over Rossana De Los Rios in a match that took 64 minutes. Williams had just 15 unforced errors against 31 winners. De Los Rios managed just four winners in the match.

Schiavone, seeded fifth, fell to Vera Dushevina 6-7 (0-7), 7-5, 6-1 after nearly 3 hours of play. She converted only three of 14 break-point chances while Dushevina managed six service breaks. Schiavone claimed the French Open this month.

No. 4-seeded Jelena Jankovic got past Laura Robson 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); and eighth-seeded Kim Clijsters routed Maria Elena Camerin 6-0, 6-3 in other results for highly seeded players.

Also Monday, No. 11-seeded Marion Bartoli stopped Julia Goerges 6-4, 6-3; 12th-seeded Nadia Petrova defeated Tatjana Malek 6-4, 6-3; No. 13-seeded Shahar Peer eliminated Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4; 15th-seeded Yanina Wickmayer slipped by Alison Riske 6-4, 5-7, 6-3; and No. 17th-seeded Justine Henin topped Anastasija Sevastova 6-4, 6-3.

Lowers seeds advancing were No. 26 Alisa Kleybanova, 27th-seeded Maria Kirilenko, and 30th-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova.

Greta Arn claimed a 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3 upset of 34th-seeded Kateryna Bondarenko.

Unseeded winners Monday included Regina Kulikova, Tsvetana Pironkova, Angelique Kerber, Yung-Jan Chan, Alla Kudryavtseva, Aleksandra Wozniak, Varvara Lepchenko, Jarmila Groth, Petra Martic, Andrea Hlavackova, Shenay Perry, Karolina Sprem, Alicia Molik, Kirsten Flipkens, Melanie Oudin, Kristina Barrois and Vera Zvonareva.
