Ambrose error gives Infineon to Johnson

SONOMA, Calif., June 20 (UPI) -- A mistake by Marcos Ambrose during a caution let Jimmie Johnson overtake him Sunday and win the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Ambrose appeared on his way to winning his first career Sprint Cup race and was holding the lead during a caution on lap 104. But rather than maintaining his the caution speed as required by NASCAR rules, the Australian shut off his engine in a bid to maintain fuel and thus lost his running spot.

That let Johnson reclaim the lead for good with six laps to go. He pulled away from Robby Gordon on the final restart and went on to beat him by 3 seconds to collect his first-ever NASCAR road course win and fourth title of the season.

Points leader Kevin Harvick finished third, while defending Infineon champ Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon completed the Top 5 finishers.
