NELSPRUIT, South Africa, June 16 (UPI) -- Jean Beausejour completed a nice team play with a goal Wednesday, giving Chile a 1-0 World Cup victory over Honduras in the teams' World Cup opener.

Chile, which hadn't won a World Cup game in 48 years, was the aggressor through the contest, putting pressure on the Honduran defense and goalkeeper Noel Valladares. The Chilean attack finished with five solid shots on target and 20 shots toward goal overall.

But it took a good team play in which five Chilean players touched the ball in the 34th minute to get anything past Valladares.

Chile had the ball in the middle of the field and worked it toward the right. After a drop pass, the ball was pushed forward to Mauricio Isla. He drove the ball toward the middle, forcing Valladares to react to that threat, but Beausejour sprinted in and redirected the ball into the right side of the goal.

Chile tested Valladares several other times, including a point-blank header by Waldo Ponce that the Honduran goaltender was able to secure in the second half.

Switzerland set a World Cup record with its fifth consecutive shutout in a 1-0 upset of world No. 2 Spain in the other Group H game Wednesday.

The results left Chile and Switzerland on top of the group heading into the second set of round-robin play Monday. Chile goes against Switzerland and Spain plays Honduras.
