Hamilton holds off Button for Canadian win

MONTREAL, June 13 (UPI) -- Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton held off teammate Jenson Button in the late stages Sunday and went on to win the Canadian Grand Prix by 2.2 seconds.

Hamilton passed Red Bull's Mark Webber with 20 laps remaining on the 70-lap Formula One event at the 2.7-mile, 14-turn Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course in Montreal.

Then he outdueled Button down the stretch to win the Grand Prix for the second time in his three attempts, giving its second McLaren 1-2 finish in two races.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finished third, while Webber ended up fifth and teammate Sebastian Vettel came in sixth.

Hamilton's win gave him the world championship lead with 109 points, three points ahead of defending champion Button, while Webber has 103.
