CLEVELAND, June 10 (UPI) -- Russell Branyan capped off a wild ninth inning with a two-run single Thursday that gave the Cleveland Indians an 8-7 victory over Boston.
The Indians rallied from a five-run deficit to take a 6-5 lead into the ninth, during which both teams scored twice.
Boston moved in front in the top half of the inning when, with two out, J.D. Drew was hit by a pitch thrown by Kerry Wood and Adrian Beltre hit his eighth homer.
Daniel Bard (1-2), however, could not protect the Boston lead in the bottom of the ninth.
Trevor Crowe drew a leadoff walk and Shin-Soo Choo doubled Crowe to third. Austin Kearns walked to load the bases, but Travis Hafner struck out and Jhonny Peralta fouled out to the catcher to give the Red Sox a chance to escape with the victory.
Branyan then came through with a single to right on a 2-1 pitch that brought home the tying and winning runs.
The teams split a four-game series.
Wood (1-2) got the win despite blowing a lead in the ninth.
Boston took a 4-0 lead in the first, two of the runs scoring on a fielding error by third baseman Andy Marte.
