Donald, two others lead golf's Madrid Open

MADRID, May 27 (UPI) -- Luke Donald had a pair of eagles Thursday and is tied with two other golfers for the lead after one round of the European Tour's Madrid Masters.

Donald, Rhys Davies and Jamie Donaldson each finished at 7-under-par 65 and are one stroke ahead of Maaten Lafeber and Paul McGinley. Eight other golfers are tied for sixth at 5-under 67.

Donald opened his round with a bogey but got back to even with a birdie at the fifth hole. He started a charge with birdies at Nos. 7 and 8 and then eagled the par-5, 653-yard ninth hole. He added another eagle 3 at the 562-yard 16th hole and pulled into a share of the lead with a birdie at 17.

Davies and Donaldson, who both started on the back nine Thursday, each were bogey-free on the day.

Davies had a birdie at No. 13 and three times beat par on back-to-back holes, recording birdies at Nos. 15-16, 2-3 and 7-8.

Donaldson opened with a birdie at 10, finished his first nine with birdies at 17 and 18. He also had birdies at Nos. 3 and 5 before matching Davies with birdies at Nos. 7-8.
