S. Williams wins in straight sets

PARIS, May 24 (UPI) -- No. 1-ranked Serena Williams was pushed to a first-set tie-breaker before finishing off a first-round win Monday at the French Open.

Williams committed 17 of her 22 unforced errors on the day in the first set of a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Stefanie Voegele. But Williams had little trouble in the 27-minute second set, winning 27 of the 40 points in sealing the win.

Third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki easily got by Alla Kudryavtseva 6-0, 6-3 and No. 5 Elena Dementieva posted a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Petra Martic in other early Monday matches.

Jelena Jankovic, the No. 4 seed, sailed through a 22-minute first set en route to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Alicia Molik and seventh-seeded Samantha Stosur was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Simona Halep.

Also, No. 8-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska topped Elena Baltacha 6-0, 7-5 and 11th-seeded Na Li stopped Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 6-3.

Other seeded players advancing were 17th-seeded Francesca Schiavone, No. 24 Lucie Safarova, 28th-seeded Alisa Kleybanova, No. 27 Alona Bondarenko, 31st-seeded Alexandra Dulgheru and No. 32 Kateryna Bondarenko.

Unseeded winners Monday included Roberta Vinci, Julia Goerges, Aleksandra Wozniak, Arantxa Parra Santonja, Polona Hercog, Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, Anabel Medina-Garrigues, Timea Bacsinszky, Tathiana Garbin, Sophie Ferguson, Ana Ivanovic, Kaia Kanepi, Magdalena Rybarikova, Rossana De Los Rios and Yaroslava Shvedova.
