GLADSTONE, N.J., May 23 (UPI) -- Sun Young Yoo prevailed over Angela Stanford Sunday, notching a 3 & 1 win to claim the title of the Sybase Match Play Championship.
With the victory, Yoo collected her first LPGA Tour championship -- and she did the hard way, defeating the first, fourth, fifth and 10th-ranked players in the world along the way.
Stanford staged a rally after finding herself at 1-down, notching wins on the 11th and 12th holes at Hamilton Golf Club in Gladstone, N.J., but at that point, Yoo claimed the momentum, two-putting for par on 13 to square the match and following with another par to go 1-up.
Yoo increased her lead to 2-up thanks to a 9-foot birdie putt on the 16th, and Stanford conceded the match after missing a putt from off the front of the 17th green.
Jiyai Shin, the world No. 1, defeated Amy Yang 3 & 2 for the consolation title.
