Williams leaves Tampa Bay front office

TAMPA, Fla., May 11 (UPI) -- Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and current pro scouting chief Doug Williams is leaving the team, officials said Tuesday.

"(Bucs General Manager) Mark (Dominik) and I have sat down and talked about my future," Williams said in a statement. "After a lot of thought, I felt that it was the right time for me to look at new options. I wish nothing but the best for the Buccaneers."

"I have tremendous respect for Doug's talents and am very appreciative of his many contributions to this franchise over the years," Dominik said. "At the end of last season, Doug and I began a conversation regarding his career. Doug concluded that now is the time for him to make the smoothest transition."

Williams, who left the Bucs to lead the Washington Redskins to a Super Bowl title in 1988, said he was leaving "to pursue other opportunities."

Williams first joined Tampa Bay's front office in 2004 and last year replaced Dominik as director of pro scouting when Dominik took over for Bruce Allen as general manager, the Tampa Tribune reported.
