Werth named NL player of the week

NEW YORK, May 10 (UPI) -- Philadelphia outfielder Jason Werth, who hit four home runs last week, was named the National League player of the week, NL officials said Monday.

Werth led the league with 25 runs batted in and the four home runs and was second with four doubles and nine runs batted in. He hit .360 for the period May 3-9.

He went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI in a 7-2 victory Thursday over St. Louis.

Other NL player-of-the-week nominees this past week included Giants outfielder Aaron Rowand, Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier, Washington relief pitcher Matt Capps and Phillies starter Jamie Moyer.
