MLB: San Diego 2, Houston 1

HOUSTON, May 8 (UPI) -- Jon Garland tossed seven shutout innings Saturday, allowing just two hits as the San Diego Padres edged Houston 2-1.

Garland (4-2) was tough, walking just one batter and striking out two to lift the Padres to their third win in four games.

Heath Bell pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his eighth save of the year for San Diego, which got RBI from Chase Headley and Yorvit Torrealba.

David Eckstein went 2-for-4 in the Padres victory.

The Astros, who dropped their 11th game in 12 tries, got their lone RBI from Geoff Blum and wasted a fine performance from Felipe Paulino (0-5), who held San Diego to one earned run on five hits without walking a batter.
