Montanes ousts Federer at Estoril

ESTORIL, Portugal, May 8 (UPI) -- Defending champ Albert Montanes downed World No. 1 Roger Federer Saturday, gaining a berth in the Estoril Open final in Portugal.

Montanes, the fourth seed, prevailed over Federer 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in a bit under 90 minutes in the semifinal contest. The victory over Federer -- Estoril's 2008 winner -- was the first in four tries for Montanes against the Swiss superstar.

In the championship round, he will face Portuguese favorite Frederico Gil, who downed fifth-seeded Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to move on.

Gil is making his first-ever ATP finals appearance while Montanes sports a career 3-4 record in finals matches. He won his only previous contest with Gil.
