Garcia-Lopez advances in straight sets

ESTORIL, Portugal, May 6 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez posted a solid second-round victory Thursday at the $580,000 Estoril Open clay-court tennis tournament.

Garcia-Lopez ousted Leonardo Tavares 6-2, 6-2 without facing a break point in collecting a quarterfinals berth in the tournament. In addition to winning 77 percent of the points on serve, Garcia-Lopez took more points (36-34) then Tavares when Tavares served.

He'll go against Alberto Martin in Friday's quarterfinals. Martin handled last-minute fill-in David Marrero 6-1, 6-4 in 67 minutes also without having to defend a break-point situation. Marrero was called on to replace fourth-seeded Gael Monfils, who withdrew because of a food-related illness.

Also Thursday, Frederico Gil stopped Santiago Giraldo and local favorite Rui Machado beat Michael Przysiezny, with both matches decided by 6-4, 6-4 scores. Przysiezny was pressed into service when No. 2-seeded Ivan Ljubicic withdrew Wednesday.

Gil and Machado are paired against each other in the quarterfinals. The other matches Friday will be world No. 1 Roger Federer playing Arnaud Clement and No. 4-seeded defending champion Albert Montanes meeting eighth-seeded Pablo Cuevas.
