Cuevas makes Estoril Open second round

ESTORIL, Portugal, May 4 (UPI) -- No. 8-seeded Pablo Cuevas rallied for a three-set win Tuesday at the Estoril Open tennis tournament in Portugal.

Cuevas had his serve broken three times in the first set before settling down and posting a 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Pablo Andujar. He piled up six service breaks over the final two sets after a first set in which he won just 19 of 46 points.

Fifth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez defeated Xavier Malisse 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) but No. 6-seeded Florian Mayer fell 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 to Frederico Gil in the other matches involving seeded players Tuesday.

Bjorn Phau defeated Marc Lopez 6-4, 4-6, 6-1; Alberto Martin stopped Federico Del Bonis 7-6 (10-8), 6-1; and Rui Machado was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Nicolas Massu in other completed matches.

However, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Santiago Giraldo both advanced when their opponents retired with injuries. Gimeno-Traver led Nicolas Lapentti 6-3, 3-1 when their match ended and Giraldo was ahead of Steve Darcis 6-4 when Darcis said he couldn't continue.
