MUNICH, Germany, May 3 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Mikhail Youzhny and third-seeded Tomas Berdych each needed less than an hour Monday to collect first-round victories at the BMW Open in Germany.

Youzhny, last year's BMW runner-up, pummeled Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-4 in 59 minutes. He lost only 13 points on serve, with the bulk of those coming in Chardy's lone service break. Youzhny had already established control of the match, however, dropping only nine points total in the first set.

Berdych was even more efficient finishing off a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Kevin Krawietz in 44 minutes. Krawietz won just four points over Berdych's seven service games.

Seventh-seeded Julien Benneteau was ousted when he dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision to Philipp Petzschner but No. 8-seeded Benjamin Becker survived his three-setter, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 over Stephane Robert.

Andreas Beck rallied for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 win over Denis Istomin in the day's other first-round match.
