Szavay among Portugal upset victims

ESTORIL, Portugal, May 3 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Agnes Szavay was ousted in a tight three-set, first-round loss Monday at the $220,000 Estoril Open tennis tournament in Portugal.

Szavay was one of three upset victims during Monday's play at the clay-court tournament. She was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Anastasija Sevastova.

Sevastova won seven more points (92-85) in the match but was able to pile up seven service breaks, including three in the final set.

Also losing Monday were No. 3-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak, who was pasted 6-1, 6-1 in 48 minutes by Julia Goerges, and eighth-seeded Sybille Bammer, who fared barely better in a 6-1, 6-3 rout by Kirsten Flipkens.

No. 7-seeded Shuai Peng, who topped Julie Coin 6-2, 6-2, was the only seeded winner Monday.

Tatjana Malek defeated Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 7-5 and Kimiko Date Krumm survived a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) battle with Petra Martic that featured a total of 237 points and took 3 hours, 12 minutes.
