NL picks Freese as Player of the Week

NEW YORK, May 3 (UPI) -- St. Louis rookie third baseman David Freese picked up his first National League Player of the Week award following a week in which he had 11 runs batted in.

Freese hit .462 with three home runs in knocked in a league-best 11 runs in games played April 26-May 2. He had a .500 on-base percentage over that period.

More than half his weekly RBI total came in a game Thursday against Atlanta in which he drove in six runs in a 10-4 win. He was the first Cardinals rookie to have six RBI in a game since 1957.

Also nominated for NL award recognition were the Cardinals' Albert Pujols and Chris Carpenter, Chicago's Alfonso Soriano and Ryan Theriot, Florida's Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson, the Dodgers' Andre Ethier, Atlanta's Jayson Heyward, Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez, and the Mets' David Wright and Rod Barajas.
