CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 1 (UPI) -- Billy Mayfair posted a one-under 71 Saturday, finishing three rounds of the Quail Hollow Championship ahead by two strokes.
Mayfair maintained his second-round lead after an up-and-down round that saw him briefly lose the lead to Paul Goydos. But he rebounded, thanks in part to a sterling tee shot onto the green of the par-three 13th, putting him in position to drain a six foot birdie putt at the Charlotte, N.C., course.
Mayfair, who is looking for his sixth PGA win, ended 54 holes with a nine under-par 207, leading Masters champion Phil Mickelson (71) and Davis Love III (68) in second place at minus-seven.
J.J. Henry (71), Angel Cabrera (73) and Dustin Johnson (72) finished Saturday tied for fourth at six-under-par 210.
Mickelson challenged but couldn't wrest the lead away from Mayfair, missing the green at No. 17 and bogeying the hole, leaving him two back.
Love moved into contention thanks to a bogey-free round. He registered one birdie and 12 pars through 13 holes of the third round.
