Gonzalez takes first-round lead in Seville

SEVILLE, Spain, April 29 (UPI) -- Ricardo Gonzalez fired a 7-under-par 65 Thursday and has the lead after one round of the European Tour's Spanish Open.

Gonzalez had eight birdies and a bogey in his round in taking a one-stroke lead over Paul Waring. Nine golfers are tied for third at 4-under 68.

Gonzalez, playing the back nine of the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla course first, had birdies at Nos. 11 and 13 before getting a 5 on the 428-year 14th hole for a bogey. He added back-to-back birdies at 16 and 17 and had birdies on Nos. 4-5-6. A closing birdie completed the 65.

Waring started his round with three consecutive birdies. An eagle at the 5-par fifth hole had him 5-under after five holes. He gave a stroke back at the seventh hole but closed the front side with a birdie at No. 9.

He pulled even with Gonzalez with birdies at Nos. 14 and 17 only to have a bogey on the 18th hole drop him into second place.
