Clausen, McCoy chosen in NFL draft

NEW YORK, April 23 (UPI) -- Quarterbacks Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame and Colt McCoy of Texas were picked in the NFL draft Friday and seven Florida players went in the first three rounds.

The second and third rounds of the draft were completed Friday and the final four rounds will be conducted on Saturday.

Clausen was the 16th player chosen in the second round and the 48th selected overall. He went to the Carolina Panthers, who released veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme in March. Clausen left school a year early after throwing 28 touchdown passes with four interceptions last season.

McCoy, who won more games than any other college quarterback in history, went in the third round to the Cleveland Browns. He was the 85th player chosen. Cleveland waived quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson following last season, but they added Delhomme and Seneca Wallace.

McCoy suffered a shoulder injury in his team's national championship game loss to Florida. His leading receiver, Jordan Shipley, was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals just one selection before McCoy's name was called.

Three players from Florida went in the second round and another in the third. Texas and Alabama had five players selected in the first three rounds.

The Gators chosen Friday in the second round were defensive end Jermaine Cunningham (to New England), defensive end Carlos Dunlap (to Cincinnati) and linebacker Brandon Spikes (also to New England). Florida free safety Major Wright was taken in the fourth round by Chicago, which was the last team to make a pick in this year's draft.

The Bears saw 74 players chosen before they could add someone to their roster.

Ohio State did not have a player taken in the first three rounds, but the University of Ohio did. No player from Arkansas was chosen, but there was one from Arkansas State.
