Flyers' Carter, Gagne to have surgery

PHILADELPHIA, April 21 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Flyers forwards Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne will undergo surgery and miss significant playing time, team officials said Wednesday.

Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said both of the star forwards will undergo foot surgery in Philadelphia, with Carter out indefinitely and Gagne expected to miss at least three weeks.

That would definitely put them out of action for the rest of the Flyers' current Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series with the New Jersey Devils, which Philadelphia leads 3-1, and for quite awhile beyond that.

"Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne will both have right foot surgery on Friday performed by Dr. Steve Raikin in Philadelphia to repair fractures," Holmgren said.

Both players were hurt in the Flyers' Tuesday Game 4 win while blocking shots. Carter led the Flyers with 33 goals and added 28 assists in the regular season, while Gagne notched 17 goals and 40 points in 58 games.
