Furyk beats Davis in Heritage playoff

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., April 18 (UPI) -- Jim Furyk beat Brian Davis in a playoff Sunday to win the Heritage event at Hilton Head Island, S.C., after Davis took a two-stroke penalty on the playoff hole.

On the first playoff hole, Davis called a penalty on himself after trying to hit his third shot from a sandy hazard area, alerting PGA Tour rules official Slugger White that his club had come into contact with a dead branch during his backswing.

White ruled a two-stroke penalty on the play, leading Davis to double bogey while Furyk responded with a par for the title, his second win this year and 15th in his PGA Tour career.

Furyk carded a 2-under 69 while Davis shot a 68 and forced an extra hole with a birdie in the last regulation hole. Both finished 72 holes at 13 under 271.

Bo Van Pelt (69) and Luke Donald (70) shared third place at minus-10, while a trio including Camilo Villegas (70), Ricky Barnes (71) and Kris Blanks (68) finished fifth at 9-under 275.
