Upsets mark second-round in Barcelona

BARCELONA, Spain, April 14 (UPI) -- No. 3-seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez was among three highly seeded players losing in second-round play Wednesday in Spain's $220,000 Barcelona Ladies Open.

Martinez Sanchez dropped a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 decision to Arantxa Parra Santonja in a match that took more than 2 1/2 hours.

Parra Santonja won just four more points -- 111-107 -- over the course of the match but had a total of eight service breaks in the first and third sets in winning.

Other upsets claimed fourth-seeded Maria Kirilenko, who lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Yaroslava Shvedova in another long match, and No. 5-seeded Sorana Cirstea, who was ousted 6-1, 6-4 by Iveta Benesova in a relatively brisk 68 minutes.

Top-seeded Francesca Schiavone dropped serve just once in a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Tathiana Garbin and No. 7-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro took a 6-3, 7-5 decision from Kristina Barrios in other matches involving seeded players.

The three matches completing Wednesday's schedule all went three sets as Alexandra Dulgheru topped Sara Errani 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); Timea Bacsinszky defeated Regina Kulikova 2-6, 6-2, 6-3; and defending champion Roberta Vinci beat Laura Pous Tio 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
