SEATTLE, April 12 (UPI) -- Justin Duchscherer pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing only two hits Monday as the Oakland A's downed Seattle 4-0 in the Mariners' home opener.
Duchscherer (1-0), who has returned to the A's after missing the 2009 season due to injuries and depression, posted his first win since July 8, 2008, giving up two walks and striking out four.
Cliff Pennington hit a solo homer and Gabe Gross added a two-run single for Oakland, which moved to 6-2 to start the season.
Franklin Gutierrez stretched his hitting streak over two seasons to 13 straight games as the Mariners lost for the sixth time in eight contests to start the season, scoring only 21 runs during the span.
Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-1) held the A's hitless until the sixth inning in the hard-luck loss.
