Wawrinka dispatches Hanescu in Morocco

CASABLANCA, Morocco, April 11 (UPI) -- Stanislas Wawrinka took his second career ATP singles title Sunday, cruising to a win over Victor Hanescu in the Grand Prix Hassan II tennis event final.

Wawrinka, who held the Morocco event's top seed, rolled over the third-seeded Romanian 6-2, 6-3, improving to 2-6 all-time in finals. It was the Swiss' second final of the year -- he lost to Marin Cilic in January's Chennai Open title match.

Wawrinka's only previous ATP title was in 2006 in Umag. He gained the crown there after Novak Djokovic retired with an injury in a first-set tiebreaker.

The Swiss broke serve twice in the initial set and made a move, rushing out to a 5-1 lead in the second. Hanescu fought back by winning two straight games before Wawrinka got a second wind and completed the victory.

Hanescu, also been hoping to win a second career ATP singles crown, has lost in finals three times since winning Gstaad in 2008.
