NHL: New York Islanders 4, Ottawa 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y., April 3 (UPI) -- John Tavares notched a goal and an assist Saturday as the New York Islanders cruised to a 4-1 victory over Ottawa.

Dylan Reese, Jack Hillen and Sean Bergenheim each found the net while Martin Biron stopped 28-of-29 shots as the Islanders won for the fourth time in five contests.

New York put the game away in the second period, scoring a pair of goals. Tavares scored at 1:19 on a wrist shot past Ottawa goalie Brian Elliott and two minutes later Reese unleashed a slap shot from the top of the right circle that rippled the twine for a 2-0 Islanders lead.

Matt Cullen got the lone goal for Ottawa.

Despite the loss, the Senators remained in solid playoff position, holding fifth place in the Eastern Conference, four points behind New Jersey for the fourth seed.
