Student arrested in running back's slaying

MIAMI, March 27 (UPI) -- A fellow Florida International University student has turned himself in for the slaying of running back Kendall Berry, authorities said Saturday.

Berry was stabbed to death Thursday night at FIU's main Modesto Modique campus. Police indicated they had arrested a 22-year-old former teammate, WTVJ-TV, Miami, reported.

The broadcaster said Quentin Wyche, 22, was charged with second-degree murder and held without bond. Police and witnesses said the incident in the school's rec center began when Wyche allegedly insulted Berry's girlfriend and threw cookies in her face.

One witness told The Miami Herald the girl was screaming and crying and that Berry was being kicked by his attacker.

Wyche reportedly trained with the FIU Golden Panthers last summer but did not appear on the team's roster. WTVJ said the suspect was arrested twice in Volusia County, Fla., as a minor on charges of felony battery on a school board employee and a misdemeanor count of "conspiring to disrupt the education process."
