Gooden arrested, charged after accident

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., March 24 (UPI) -- Former New York Mets and Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden was arrested for driving under the influence after a New Jersey car accident, police said Wednesday.

Franklin Lakes, N.J., police issued a statement indicating Gooden was arrested after being involved in a two-car accident around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday in his hometown, The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

The newspaper quoted the statement as saying Gooden was charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, endangering the welfare of a child, driving while under the influence of drugs, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and reckless driving, among other counts.

Police said Gooden, 45, was later released on his own recognizance.

Gooden, who won the Cy Young Award for the Mets in 1985 at age 20 and pitched in the majors for 16 seasons, was twice suspended for positive drug tests and has a long history of struggles with illegal substances.
