ORLANDO, Fla., March 23 (UPI) -- Playoff games will be played under different rules governing overtimes, NFL officials said Tuesday.
Under the change announced in Orlando, Fla., by Rich McKay, the co-chairman of the NFL competition committee, if a team wins the coin toss to start overtime and then proceeds to kick a field goal, the other team has the chance to come back and tie or win the game.
If the coin-toss winner proceeds to score a touchdown, however, the game ends.
"We had this discussion for a number of years. We felt like this year's proposal -- which we called modified sudden death -- was really an opportunity to make what we think is a pretty good rule," McKay said.
NFL officials said team owners voted 28-4 in favor of the proposal at the league's annual meetings in Florida.
